This class: English 101

In this class I have recieved more out of the material due to my work ethic. I have put time, effort and practice into each assignment and I believe that it shows. Initially, I was not sure what to think. What was English 101 going to be about: Reading, Analyzing, Writing? I found out quickly that this class is about writing. However, it is about the understanding of how writing can get across to the readers. For me, word choice became one of my largest hurdles. I tried to fancy my paper with big words, intricate phrases, and finally a context that developed slow enough to grasp readers attention. Yet I found that writing is different for everyone. I appreciated the one on one conferences with Mr.Scott because he was able to tell me about my pros and cons directly. He was engaged in my writing and because of that my writing became better with each paper. So heading out of the class, I take away the knowledge that I can always do better, word choice is crucial, and conferences are a great way for me to understand and reason more clearly. The class is still not over! I'm looking forward to my iSearch essay on "how the power of words effect sp. Ed. Upbringing." it is a topic that goes perfectly in line with my future plans of study. I am intrigued by this topic so therefore the paper should be evident of my excitement. The argument that I will express is that Adults have the power to build up or destroy a child's self esteem and therefore their future. I believe that I will be able to counter argue points that people who have already began arguing on this topic.

Research Practice

The practice topic that I chose is "Is the internet changing the way our minds work?. Is that a good or bad thing?' Sources that I found include: 1) TheGuardian www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/aug/15/internet-brain-neuroscience-debate 2) MailOnline www.dailymail.co.uk/scientech/article-565207/modern-technoology-changing-the-way-brains-work-says-neuroscientist.html The Guardian is published by: The Gaurdian News and Media/ other affiliated sources this articles author is John Naughton 3 websites that were in direct link to each other were: *** A blog by Rich Couch, who is a physical scientist and well known http://letstalkbooksandpolitics.blogspot.com/2011/03/is-internet-changing-way-our-minds-work.html *** An article in the New Yorker. The Potential of Human Will

The Ted video that inspired me for my iSearch project is one called, Aimee Mullins: The opportunity of Adversity". It heavily relays the point that adults in power have the key to children's potential happiness and faith in themselves. I agree one hundred and ten percent with that idea. Listening to her speak on the importance of preparing children for adversity rather than trying to shield them from it, or "to overcome adversity" made my skin quiver. I have always had the same beliefs! To hear someone who grew up as an amputee say that she is not normal, not common, but who she is... was the breaking point for me. I appreciated her optimism about her life and the life of others. She is correct; there are no normal people in the world. What is normal anyways? Everyone has their own struggles and problems whether it is physical or emotions. The only normal thing in society is the discouragement cast upon those who seem to be. or to have a less than common lifestyle.
Where this video will take me in doing my iSearch is how as a culture, we disable the disabled with the power of words. Specifically, how a childhood diagnosis can embed a stigma and brand a child for the rest of their lives. They then go on to believe that they are for example, mentally retarded and cannot do what other children of the common mindset can do. However, studies have been done that proved that not only could they actually excel and overcome their handicap but they could meet it head on and become someone better than anyone ever could have expected! A child will achieve unless they have been made to believe that they could not. I believe and hope to be able to prove through my iSearch Project that the power of educating the "disabled" with positive words will do more than give them a common frame of mind, but it will bring out their inner potential.

Question 1) can NES-style pixel art capture the artistic essence of the original album cover, with a fraction of the resolution and color depth of an analog photograph? Answer) I believe that the artistic essence infact can capture the original photo without crossing the line. This is because many times, new ideas are formulated from existing pieces. There are barely any new ideas in this generation. I believe that there are only new creations of old ideas. Now, I do however believe that the "fair use policy" must be straddled evenly. Meaning, I believe that one who wishes to (in this case pixel art) another piece, should take serious precautions. However, I do not believe that they should have to worry about getting into trouble over it. If they do not market their "new" image and soley create the images for fun, then there is nothing wrong with it. Not many people in the world are fans of this type of art anyways. I believe that the way the artist set their work up should be formulated with policy. If someone who is interested in enhancing the original work then they should be allowed to. The way that someone creates a piece of work should differ in the eyes of the law if the new piece does not harm the old work. I highly doubt that any of the pixelated pictures are harming any of the originals. They don't look as clear, therefore they already have a leg under the first. Second of all, the pixelated pictures aren't as iconic. The whole reason that new pictures are being created from the old is that they were well known pictures. There isn't anything wrong with wanting to imitate a iconic image. Society knows who create an original piece, the people who worry about losing money due to new people wanting to remake their work, should worry about better things. They should be thankful that their work was amazing enough that someone else takes pride in their work.

Logical Fallacy in MasterCard ad

In the previous ad, MasterCard creatively used the either-or argument. The company used this fallacy and put it into motion by supplying society with an unreal application of their product. This logical fallacy: “There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s MASTERCARD”. The argument that is being proposed in this ad is that the only way to purchase items is to use a MasterCard. The slogan used by MasterCard infers that it is unmanageable or impossible to purchase anything without using one of their cards. False information forces people into corners of false perception and causes them to feel the urge and need to get a card of their own. The two-case scenario that is put on the table is unrealistic. Suppose a MasterCard user went to an off rode vending machine, they would need cash therefore, a MasterCard would be useless
The false dilemma in this ad denotes the credibility of the company yet, the slogan is somewhat the backbone of the whole company. There are more than two alternatives however; the company does not supply the viewer’s with the benefits of knowing what their options really are. When I have heard the slogan on tv, radio, or saw it in magazines I never stopped to think about what the company was telling me. I am offended by their degradation of my intelligence by supposing that I, and others alike, are not bright enough to realize that other options exist. Having a card cannot, and quite frankly, will not solve every problem that everyone has with debt, credit, and life in general. Owning a MasterCard cannot guarantee that people can buy everything that money cannot buy.

Assignment 1 Pre Draft

This blog is a summary of how my paper will initially be set up and is not in any way finished or formulated yet. This paper will require my knowledge of chapter one and chapter two. Therefore it will employ my creativity in how to make an argument make sense in a way that I address it to my audience and the intended audience of the initial audience that the creator of the picture was written to.

English 101

Something descriptively Catchy:

Yep it’s going to be a good title

Somewhere in this sentence will be a direct to the point, clear cut thesis. This is where I will begin my argument about the severity of animal testing and how controversial it is in regards to the purity, sacrificial, and selflessness afflicted upon the innocent animals, just as Christians believe that Christ was pure and innocent when he surrendered to the harsh death of being crucified on the cross to protect his followers from their sins. My thesis along with supporting evidence will catch the reader’s eyes and direct them to the argument of the paper in regards to the picture referring to religious beliefs. Now readers will get shocked when they see the depiction of a pure white colored rat hanging on a wooden cross. The play on Christ’s crucifixion to the unholy act of animal testing is the fire to the argument of the paper which will be the main focal point that I will display as the topic. I will use elements that I learned in Chapter one to grab the attention of the readers and to stay on target with the argumentative task at hand. I will use my knowledge of rhetoric devices to counter argue and/or persuade the readers to see animal testing as unjust: the main argument that I will be building on. Although the picture that I have chosen does not have any words, the image is jaw dropping and alone figuratively says more about the cruel treatment than actual text could.

Assignment #1

The video that I watched for class today was craftly sewn togeher with tid bits of Disney movie lines to reflect the Copyright Law; thus it stated what implications go along with managing and abiding by the rules of the law for not only the owner but the public as well.

A quick over view of the message (or argument) that I recieved from the video:

Ch.1
Q) What is the Copyright Law?
A) A law that states, and enforces, that only the owner of the original piece of work has the permission to use their work.

Ch.2
Q) What can be Copyrighted?
A) Books, Plays, Music, Dance, Movies and Pictures

Q) Can Ideas Be Copyrighted?
A) NO! The government does not want to limit the power of a great idea.

Ch.3
Q) What was the amount of time a Copyright lasted?
A) 14 years. The set time was once thought to give the owner enough time to turn a profit.

Q) What happened to the Copyright after the 14 years ened?
A) It was subjected to Public Domain. This meant that it was then free to be used by anyone to help entice new ideas to formulate; which is crucial to a thriving society.

Q) Is there still a limit on Copyright duration?
A) No. It has increasingly become a problem as copyrights last as long as 1 lifetime plus 70 years.

Ch. 4
Q) How can the pubic find loopholes through the Copyright Law?
A) Borrow only small amounts of Copyrighted work.
ie. Only to teach, report news, Parody, Critical Comments.

Q) Do rules apply?
A) Of course they do. The Nature, Amount, and Commercial Impact all have an effect on the Fair Use policy.

Q) Is the Fair Use rule a public right?
A) No, it is however a Legal Defensible Position.

Ch.5
Q) Why Disney clips for this short movie?
A) Company has a grandiose amount of power and inflicts radiating intimidation.

Q) So what is the overall point?
A) Movies like this, that use small clips of Copyrighted material, are gaurded by a legal safety net due to the fair use rule which the government has chosen to legally defend.

Again, this video was found on my professor's blog. Neither he or I are responsible for creating it.
